The Power of Choice
31 Jan 2006

I was doing some studies recently regarding self-control and self-discipline in all areas of life.

I heard an example that directly applies here and I want to share it.

Let me start by saying I recieve many emails and hear many people tell me "oh I could never do what you do" or "I could never give up XYZ food". Now lets put that excuse in context with the following story...

You go into an ice cream store. All around you are the best ice creams in the world with the best toppings. Everyone is smiling and happy. You are told that you can have any type of sundae you want. They fix you up with your favorite flavors in a big bowl and your favorite toppings and whipped cream and it looks so pretty and smells so good. You just can't resist. It's right there IN your hands. You'd eat it right? 99% of the people would. Your brain would be screaming EAT IT !!!

Now..... imagine as you put the spoon to your mouth you feel the cold hard steel of a gun against your temple. A voice says "eat one bite and I'll blow you away."

You'd be putting the spoon down awful quick wouldn't you? There wouldn't be one doubt in your mind that you did not want that ice cream anymore.

Yes it's an exaggerated illustration but it makes the point that for all of us - when the consequences are bad enough, we will CHOOSE to do the right thing.

Yes I do beieve in food addiction and I know how tough it is to kick it and not get dragged back in. But even the drug addict or alcoholic can beat the beast with help. So can the food addict.

The saying "Life is full of choices" is so passe these days that everyone knows it and pays no attention to it.

But really, when it comes to that bowl of ice cream or plate of cookies or whatever, if you choose NOT to eat you're choosing health and if you choose to eat XYZ food you're willfully choosing unhealthly.

And the thing is you have the power in you to make that choice every single day. Discipline and self control are a choice. I had to make choices along the way that I didn't like. But when the consequences became too great or too clear to me - I made them. (still didn't like em though - LOL)

Take some time and consider the future consequences of today's poor choices. Diabetes? Heart Disease? Never seeing kids or grandkids grow up? The list is endless.
